Trained docent volunteers patrol the sandy beach and rocky intertidal during daytime low tides to collect information about reserve use and to answer guest questions.

Docents receive training from Natural Reserve System staff or other veteran volunteers. They record the activities people use the reserve for like photography, tidepooling, frisbee, jogging and walking. This data helps us better understand what different people want out of the reserve.
Docents also take bird counts (but don't worry, you don't need to be a bird expert to participate, just have a general interest!).

The big reason for having docent volunteers is to create a presence at the reserve. Because Scripps is open to the general public it receives a lot of use and abuse. By providing educated docents we try to educate the public about why having a Reserve is important, as well as enforcing our rules.
Look for us in the navy blue shirt with the sea star logo!
