Trespass
Permitted users of the reserve enter in large groups on foot through the Buena Vista Park, and in small groups in vehicles via Dawson Drive. If you are concerned about trespass (or just curious), check the calendar to see whether approved users are scheduled. If you have concerns, call the Dawson Reserve Steward’s cell phone at 858-395-4529 or the NRS office at 858-534-2077. If you don’t reach anyone, please send an email to nrs@ucsd.edu.
Elliott Chaparral Reserve
The Elliott Reserve is not patrolled by NRS or UCSD staff on a regular basis. Therefore, please make all arrangements to be self-sufficient while there.

For emergencies that threaten life or property, please call 911.
Fire
If you see what looks like a fire in the immediate vicinity (within the main ridge and Case Valley, or just beyond) please call 911 immediately. A follow-up call to the NRS office (858-534-2077), the manager (858-229-4677) or the steward (858-395-4529) would be appropriate.
Other Emergencies
Please note that the emergency response agencies may not be familiar with the Elliott Reserve. Please take a printed topographic map of the Reserve with you to the field for orientation purposes. If you have a GPS be prepared to inform responders your lat-long location.
If you are locked into the Elliott Reserve, please call one of the following numbers of the Animal Services personnel
- Monday through Friday, 7 am – 4 pm: 858-688-3044, or 858-864-8451, or 858-864-8449
- After hours: 858-864-8453
You may also call the latter number if you need to set up your finger scan, which can be done at the entrance with an appointment during the week.
If your vehicle becomes stuck, please call the Reserve Steward during the week: 858-395-4529. There will be a charge of no less than $172. Over the weekend, you will need to contact AAA or similar service; call the NRS manager at 858-229-4677 for assistance in getting the towing personnel to your location.

Trespass

Military personnel, whether on foot, bicycle, vehicle, or horseback, do not have blanket permission to enter the Reserve. Signs are posted along the boundary to this effect.
Runners from Alliant University do not have permission to enter, nor do others, especially if walking dogs.
If you see any of these cases, you may ask the person in question whether they are aware that they are within the Reserve (it helps if you have a map and show them where you are), but you are not expected to. In any case, please inform the NRS office as soon as possible.

Poaching
Taking of any invertebrates in the Scripps Coastal Reserve is illegal. Only coastal pelagic bait fish (anchovies, sardines, etc.) and market squid may be taken with (very small) hook and line.
